10 throes
Фигуральное выражение in the throes of something (в судорогах/лихорадке чего-либо) стало употребляться в конце XVII в. В настоящее время мы встречаем in the throes of moving house (в муках переезда); in the throes of examinations (в экзаменационных муках); in the throes of office restructuring (в муках офисной реорганизации). -

20 agonize
•• agony, agonize, agonizing
•• Agony extreme mental or physical suffering (Oxford American Dictionary).
The Agony and the Ecstasy. The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat To agonize over something близко по значению к to struggle with: He is agonizing over/struggling with the final chapter of his novel.
– The Mobutu government is in its death throes/is near death.
